Anges & autres démons (Angels & Other Demons) takes a subjective journey through the work of the Mexican photographer Graciela Iturbide to explore its recurring iconographic and symbolic themes.
The book is structured as a series of narratives that shift between the spiritual, earthly and celestial dimensions of Graciela Iturbide’s images. This cross-cutting interpretation is viewed through the prism of angelic and demonic figures, and the figure of death, which have punctuated her fifty-year career. It also aims to demonstrate how women lie at the heart of her work. They are portrayed in all their power, mystery, sensuality and spirituality.
Graciela Iturbide’s photographs are accompanied by a narrative by the Mexican novelist Mateo García Elizondo. The author shares the same fascination and desire to explore the liminal spaces between dream and reality, past and present, life and death.
This book forges a dialogue between photography and literature, between two generations of Mexican artists united by similar obsessions and the enduring richness, fluidity and diversity of Mexican culture.
